About The Visit
This is a story I wrote on January 18, 2013, after the idea came to me at a truck stop in Winslow, Arizona. I wrote it after driving all night in one sitting in essentially the form it is presented here. Even if I later edit or modify it, I will probably leave this original of it here. I posted it to Facebook originally, and then decided to put it up here so folks could link to it or come back to it without going through Facebook. Several folks seem to like it, for which I'm grateful. It might be included in some form in the novel I'm working on sporadically (assuming the novel ever gets finished). Comments are welcome at visit@allanmills.com. Thanks for visiting the page.
I will also say, for the benefit of any who might find this page who didn't know her, Nanny was (and is) a very real person. She was my grandmother. She took her journey to her little cabin December 29, 2012. I was by her side with others who loved her when she went. She was a great storyteller (and if I have anything of that, I got it from her and others in our family who are much better at it than me), and you can hear her tell some of the stories on the Laughing in Nanny's Kitchen page if you are interested.
I hope you enjoy "The Visit". Love and peace to all who may see these words. -- Allan Mills, Topeka, Kansas, January 20, 2013

Here's the song referenced in the story ("The Lights of Home" sung by the Mountain View Quartet):
